Design Systems Engineers Actually Adopt
Most design systems die in a Figma file. The handoff and governance model that keeps design and engineering in sync.
A design system that lives only in a design tool is a style guide, not a system. It becomes a system when the components engineers actually import are the source of truth, and the design file is a view into that same source rather than a separate, drifting artifact.
The handoff model that works treats component changes as a shared responsibility: a design change to a component ships with the corresponding code update, reviewed by both a designer and an engineer, in the same pull request or an equivalent shared workflow.
Governance matters more than tooling. Someone needs the authority to say no to a one-off component that duplicates an existing pattern — otherwise the system fragments component by component until it's no longer a system at all, just a folder of similar-looking things.
